Inspiration and Process

This song evolved when Julie and I were just playing around. I just started strumming a random pattern of G, D, and C with an F and G for the chorus.  Julie heard a melody and began playing it on the violin. I just loved what she was doing. It reminded me of some of the music I used to hear when living in North Carolina. We performed this as an instrumental for our songwriting the next night. They all nodded their heads and said they like it, but I could tell there was something missing. So the next day I wrote the lyrics.

The lyrics came pretty easy. The violin painted the picture of camping in the mountains of western North Carolina. With that picture in mind, the lyrics just flowed.

The next challenge was to find a pattern that took advantage of the violin and still left room for the lyrics. Our first attempts were a little over 5 minutes, too long. After playing around we got the time down to 4 minutes and 5 seconds. The structure we settled on is:

Intro, V, V, C, V, C, violin, violin, V, C, outro.

This will probably change but it’s a good place to start.
