Inspiration

At the start of a hike, I talked with an older gentleman at the trailhead. I passed him a number of times during the hike, each time sharing a little more information. In a nutshell, he was 70 years old and hiked to the top of this mountain 2 times a week. This was no simple walk, either, I estimate the trail to be about 3 miles one-way, climbing 2000 feet. I was so impressed; I had to write this song.

Process

The hook, you’re never too old to play emerged on the hike down. The rest of the lyrics were based on our conversation. All I had to do was write them down.

On the music, I randomly picked the key of D (not sure why) and started in it’s relative minor (Bm ). I purposely stayed away from the D until the line, “too play.” I wanted the chorus to resolve on this line and going to the D at that time, brought it home. I still need a bridge, but have played around with a lead guitar bridge that will work.

The structure of the song is

V,V, C, V, C, V, C
