Inspiration
My significant other
is a vegetarian. The first time she cooked me dinner, we had salad
and a baked acorn squash. I kept waiting for the next course, the
“real meal”, but it never came. I didn’t make a big deal of it at
the time, but left early so I could stop at McDonalds and get a
hamburger.
I got inspired to
write this song after hearing Zoe Lewis play. She did a number of
very funny songs that were based on everyday events. She started a
few songs with a few verses describing the event that transpired
followed by a good chorus. I had to try it.
This is also part of
the recent challenge I accepted to post a song a week. This is week
number 2.
Process
I started writing the
song by making a list of different cuts of meats. I also developed a
list of vegetables. I searched on-line for items that I forgot to
add to my list. The chorus came easy when I saw the word tofu.
The music was a
different story. I started the intro with a Gm7 and Am7. After
playing around, I found that F worked really well so I ended up in
the key of F. For the chorus, I wanted to have a major sound so I
started on the I, then used the III, IV and V. My challenge was in
moving back the Gm7 (the II chord). I ended up using the VI then I,
for the transition. The pattern ended up looking like:
Intro verse: II, III
(3X)/ IV, V
Chorus I, III, IV,
V
Transition (VI,
I)
Verse (II, III, IV,
V)
